Billie Eilish Releases ‘What Was I Made For’ From The ‘Barbie’ Movie Soundtrack

The film and movie soundtrack ("Barbie The Album") are out July 20.

Billie Eilish is the last high-profile artist for the Barbie movie soundtrack, scoring the emotional ballad “What Was I Made For?”. The 21-year-old fronts the movie soundtrack alongside Charli XCXNicki Minaj and Ice Spice, PinkPantheressDua Lipa and more.

The Controversey Behind Billie Eilish On The Barbie Movie Soundtrack

“One of the f*cking greatest living artists around but had a very personal, idiosyncratic tie to Barbie as well,” Ronson (the soundtrack’s executive producer) teased the then-unannounced singer. Fans built wild conspiracy theories, naming blonde bombshells Britney Spears and Madonna as prime contenders.

The news of Eilish’s appearance on Barbie The Album divided social media. Debates on whether the melodramatic songstress fit such a bubblegum pop record only emphasized Ronson’s choice of idiosyncratic.

In the film’s trailer, Barbie ventures into the Real World on a mission of self-discovery to solve her sudden flat feet and more dire human truths like death. Everyone is right: Eilish is not an upbeat singer, and if Barbie stayed doll-like, there would be no place for the superstar. However, Barbie‘s life slowly unravels, triggering her existential adventure to the Real World. The only best way to document the depth of Barbie’s emotions is Billie Eilish’s expertly named “What Was I Made For?”

The single’s accompanying music video features a dolled-up Eilish in old-school Barbie regalia. There, she unpacks her iconic (and doll-sized) red carpet looks, only for them to be blown away and rained on. In the end, she just picks everything up and walks out of frame.

Upon premiering the music video, she shared a sweet message with fans. “To be real with you this all seemed to happen in a time when i really needed it,” Elish said. “I’m so so thankful for that.”
