Hop Into Charli XCX’s ‘Speed Drive’ from the ‘Barbie’ Soundtrack

“Speed Drive" is the fifth single from Barbie the Album, executively produced by Mark Ronson.

Charli XCX let 2014-club-banger “Vroom Vroom” walk, so she could run wild with “Speed Drive,” the latest single from the Barbie movie soundtrack. Previous singles like PinkPantheress’ “Angel” and Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice’s “Barbie World” already hit TikTok virality due to the film’s insatiable fanbase. The movie and its soundtrack, Barbie The Album, is out July 21.

Working with genre-breaking producers like A.G. Cook and the late SOPHIE kept the 30-year-old in mint condition. Although CRASH mirrors Dua Lipa‘s resurged trendy synths, Charli’s hyperpop party-girl persona is locked in forever. From “Hot In It” to “Hot Girl,” she rebels against pop until it’s borderline rave but repeat-appropriate.

Ever since her prophetic futurism on Pop 2, Charli XCX’s appearance on the Barbie soundtrack felt inevitable and right. “I’ve always really liked singing about cars,” she told Rolling Stone. “For me, there is this intrinsic link between driving and music and feeling like you’re a star when you’re in a car … [I wanted “Speed Drive” to] feel quite bratty [and] about just being hot.”

The star took to Instagram to express her gratitude while showing off never-before-seen childhood pictures. Her thank-you note touched on how Barbie evoked a sense of escapism, providing her confidence to win a cruise singing competition at the age of four.

Charli will star in the remake of the 1978 cult horror film Faces of Death alongside Euphoria’s Barbie Ferreira and Stranger Things’ Dacre Montgomery. Earlier this year, she wrapped her CRASH Tour at Coachella 2023 with special guest Troye Sivan at her hip.
