The 1975 have officially announced their fifth studio album, Being Funny In A Foreign Language. It arrives on October 14 via Dirty Hit. The band has been quiet since 2020’s Notes On A Conditional Form, but they’re breaking their silence with the new single, “Part Of The Band.” The band has been teasing the July 7 release date with a series of mysterious posters and billboards. They also teased the title of the upcoming album with postcards sent to fans. “Part of The Band” arrives with a black and white video directed by Samuel Bradley. Check it out below.
Before the song’s release, The 1975 shared the lyrics across social media. And just like we’ve come to expect from Matty Healy, the lyrics are pretty out there. Sex, drugs, and self-loathing are all up for debate on “Part Of The Band.” He sings about these themes over light and airy acoustic instrumentation that’s blended with playful orchestral elements.
It’s an uncharacteristically chill track for the band, particularly as a lead single. But even though it’s more of a relaxed track, the composition of the track is by no means “chill.” Full of folk and orchestra elements, woodwinds, horns, warped digital effects, accents, and vocals with an unusual cadence. The 1975 is probably the only band that can make a song this complex come off this cool and collected.
