charlieonnafriday Bares it All On ‘Somebody New’

It was a somewhat quiet 2023 for Seattle-based artist charlieonnafriday. While the previous year brought his first full-length album, ONNAFRIDAY, to audiences, his strategy the following year was more single-oriented, expanding his network through a few choice collabs with the likes of Kidd G and Natalie Jane. As the 20-year-old eyes a true breakout in 2024, he’s starting the year off in a new direction with the decidedly emotion single, “Somebody New.”

“Somebody New” Showcases A Reflective Side of charlieonnafriday

Especially when compared to previous times he came across our radar, “Somebody New” stands out as a much more somber take on his half-pop, half-rap sound. While some of what he previously released danced around sentimental themes, the overriding atmosphere tended towards party music. Here, the somber synth hits drive home a pretty melancholy atmosphere, and the lyrics Charlie lays over top are just as brooding. “Kept it real with you, girl, and you know that / Took my heart out, I told you to hold that / Gave you all of my trust and you broke that / Tell me, how a good thing ended so bad?”

Further, the flows that charlieonnafriday adopts on “Somebody New” speak to pronounced development. It’s not only in genre where comparisons to The Kid LAROI and late-career Justin Bieber ring true—the Seattle native here sounds comfortably settled into catchy melodies and melodic adlibs. In all, “Somebody New” may not be a total reinvention of the charlieonnafriday formula, but the growth he displays certainly bodes for what he may have in store for the future.
