Even though the 2024 Golden Globes still don’t know a proper seating arrangement, at least Billie Eilish won Best Original Song (again) for her Barbie hit, “What Was I Made For.” 2023 contained a year’s worth of reality checks for the entertainment industry. Despite this, the ceremony’s host, Jo Koy, still lacked the horsepower for a three-hour event.
Eilish, the polarizing addition to the Barbie: The Album, beat out five other heavy-hitting nominations with her teary ballad: “Addicted to Romance” by Bruce Springsteen in She Came to Me; “Dance the Night” by Mark Ronson and Dua Lipa in Barbie; “I’m Just Ken” by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt in Barbie; “Peaches” by Jack Black and Aaron Horvath in The Super Mario Bros. Movie; and “Road to Freedom” by Lenny Kravitz in Rustin.
Upon accepting the Golden Globe for Best Original Song, Eilish delivered an emotional speech, thanking her brother/producer Finneas. “I was not expecting this in this moment. Thank you to my brother, Finneas. You are the reason I am who I am,” she began. Between pleasantry salutations towards director/writer Greta Gerwig and producer/star Margot Robbie, the speech took a personal turn.
“It was exactly a year ago almost that we were shown the movie and I was very, very miserable and depressed at the time. Writing that song kind of saved me a little bit,” she shared. “A year later and here we are. It’s really surreal. I feel incredibly, incredibly lucky, incredibly lucky and grateful.”

Taylor Swift Loses The “Cinematic and Box Office Achievement” Award To Barbie
Surprisingly, Taylor Swift made the rare yet compelling appearance at the Globes. Her sole nomination was in the “Cinematic and Box Office Achievement” category. However, sandwiched between seven other nominations, the “Anti-Hero” singer lost to Barbie. The July film undoubtedly captivated 2023 with $1.4 billion gross in box offices worldwide.
Swift’s revolutionary concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, the highest-grossing documentary and concert film of all time, scored $261.6 million worldwide. Although, her serpentine sequin gown deserved its own nomination.
