The 2024 Golden Globes

Yesterday, Sunday, January 7th, the 81st edition of the Golden Globes officially kicked off the 2024 award season. Host Jo Koy gave a rather sloppy introduction, and the winners either took the show seriously or not. Despite this, there were many memorable wins. Going into the show, the hit movie of the summer, Oppenheimer, had eight nominations. The movie ended up winning five, including one for Best Drama, Best Male Actor in a Motion Picture (Cillian Murphy), Best Director (Christopher Nolan) and Best Supporting Male Actor in a Motion Picture (Robert Downey Jr.). Barbie also won two awards: Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Best Original Song.

Continuing on with the big screen, Poor Things won for Best Comedy Movie and Best Comedic Actress (Emma Stone). The Holdovers won for Best Comedic Actor (Paul Giamatti) and Best Supporting Actress (Da’Vine Joy Randolph). Killers of the Flower Moon also won an award for Best Actress in a Drama (Lily Gladstone). Gladstone was also the first Indigenous person to win such an award.

Moving to television, HBO’s Succession was the top winner, scoring in the categories of Best TV Drama. It also scored Best TV Actress (Sarah Snook), Best TV Actor (Kieran Culkin) and Best Supporting Actor on TV (Matthew MacFayden). Netflix’s Beef won Best Limited Series, and its actors, Ali Wong and Steven Yeun, won for Best Actors in a Limited Series. The Bear won for Best Comedy Show, and Ayo Edibiri and Jeremy Allen White won for their notable performances.

This is the first big awards show not to be delayed or postponed by the writers and actors strikes. The 2024 Golden Globes is a testament to moving past the problems of ethics or finances. On the show’s usual political speeches, this year decided to steer clear of any mention of politics. With Billie Eilish‘s big win for her hit single, “What I Was Made For,” the show itself seemed to turn out another success.
