The mysterious English electronic producer “SBTRKT” has joined forces with Toro y Moi for a new single, “Days Go By.” With SBTRKT’s 7-year hiatus finally ending in 2022, it’s great to see his work finally trickling back. So without further ado, let’s check out this new track.
A Instant Synth Classic
Filled with falling ’80s synths and grimy basslines, the retro distortion is a defining feature of “Days Go By.” The track is an electropop classic at first, with a dreamy instrumental complimenting Toro y Moi’s echoing nostalgic lyrics:
“I called just to see if you could still go out /
Nothing was open so we just stayed in /
Go out for a drive around midnight”
But suddenly, the song throws you for a loop with a beat switch-up. Switching to a half-time feel, SBTRKT makes you feel as if you are tipsy, masterfully combining a slow trap beat with electronic risers and soundscapes. There’s no words here—just a vibe.
The song does a final turn in the last 5 seconds of the track, with a synth string build-up to nothing as the song concludes. This song truly is a journey and an experience that is true to the SBTRKT style.
“Days Go By” is SBTRKT’s 18th single so far and will be part of the much-anticipated new album, The Rat Road. Projected to release in May of 2023, it will be great to see what exciting things SBTRKT has in store for us. Check out SBTRKT’s future projects here.
