After shaking the room with her whimsical and bold single “Attention” in June, Doja Cat channels the devil in “Paint The Town Red.”
Doja Cat Backs All Of Her Statements In “Paint The Town Red”
Doja is more unapologetic than ever in her new single released on Friday, August 4th. “Paint The Town Red” samples the chorus of Dionne Warwick’s “Walk On By.” The pop/rap star uses her predictable melodic rapping style with her satisfactory vocal fry. The jazzy beat borrows punchy trumpet riffs and dreamy vocals from Warwick’s 1964 classic. Doja Cat takes her recent controversies head on, backing her statements and embracing the devil people claim her to be.
Her tone is stagnant throughout and the beat is minimalist; lacking variation from the verses to the hook. The chorus is glossed with Doja’s high-pitched background vocals reminiscent of Kendrick Lamar’s animated voices. She shamelessly raps, “’Cause, bitch, I said what I said / I’d rather be famous instead / I let all that get to my head / I don’t care, I paint the town red.”
The Fame Officially “Gets To Her Head”
The “Need To Know” rapper references her shaved head which sparked online bullying with people claiming she “lost her mind” and looked ugly. In addition, Doja Cat is often called demonic and there is constant speculation of her being a member of the illuminati. She did in fact “let it go to her head” by shaving her hair off, but Doja stands behind her recent comment that opinions do not affect her.
Besides, “Paint The Town Red” can have several possible meanings. Firstly, it could mean she will continue being her unfiltered self, despite commentary from the haters. Another meaning, according to Genius, could be literally painting the town red with blood by killing everyone. But this alludes to her alter ego ‘Scarlet’ introduced for the new era. ‘Scarlet’ appears in the music videos for “Attention” and “Paint The Town Red” covered in blood. Thirdly, she is killing her former self and past albums because she doesn’t want to associate with them. A promotion tactic for the single involved putting a red filter on all of her past albums and single covers on streaming services.
Doja Cat’s Recent Controversies
“Paint The Town Red” follows Doja Cat’s inpouring of controversies resulting in her losing over 600k followers on Instagram. The single’s lyrics reiterate that she stands behind dating comedian, streamer and former vine star J. (Jeffrey) Cyrus. “You could use a revamp with a new vibe, sis / “I don’t need a fan ’cause my boo like it.” J. Cyrus has grooming and sexual misconduct allegations made against him from multiple women. Also, old videos recently resurfaced of the comedian being racist and using a homophobic slur. When fans began scolding Doja about dating the controversial streamer and comedian, Doja blocked and lashed out on them.
In one response to a fan who commented on her Instagram that she was losing all of her fans because of J. Cyrus, Doja wrote:
“I DON’T GIVE A F— WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT MY PERSONAL LIFE I NEVER HAVE AND NEVER WILL GIVE A F— WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT ME OR MY PERSONAL LIFE GOODBYE AND GOOD RIDDANCE MISERABLE HOES HAHA!”
Furthermore, Doja writes about a Twitter exchange in May where she called her fans dumb. This is just one of the recent instances Doja was in a heated exchange with a fan.
“Fans ain’t dumb, but extremists are / I’m a demon, Lord,” she raps in “Paint The Town Red.”

“Paint The Town Red” Music Video
To make light of demonic and satanic criticism, Doja literally dances with the devil in the visuals for “Paint The Town Red.” Scarlet becomes the devil in hell and conquers demons. Then she proceeds to chuck scraps of bloody meat and ride an enormous green creature in the sky. You’ll need to watch for yourself to believe it.
