When We Were Young Fest Causes Controversy

Live Nation has announced their inaugural When We Were Young festival, which is a nostalgia-ridden, emo event in October. The festival takes place at the Las Vegas Festival Grounds on the Strip. The announcement went viral on social media, and tickets for the day-long fest sold out in minutes. Live Nation added two more days so fans can attend the shows on October 10th, 23rd, and 29th. But fans are skeptical of When We Were Young, and here’s why.

So Many Bands, So Little Time

The festival announcement proudly boasts performances from more than 60 bands, including Paramore, My Chemical Romance, and Avril Lavigne. When Live Nation first announced they were going to add another day to the fest, fans believed they would spread out the acts over two days. Instead, Live Nation announced they would be adding another day with the exact same lineup so that fans who could not originally buy tickets had another chance. The same goes with the added third day. Fans are wondering how, if the festival lasts about thirteen hours, they will see all their favorite bands. Many are concerned about scheduling conflicts and shorter set times than at normal festivals.

Security Scares

Live Nation has been embattled in lawsuits since the tragic accidents at Travis Scott’s Astroworld Festival. Fans are rightly concerned about their own safety, given Live Nation’s missteps recently. The festival grounds supposedly can hold tens of thousands of people and has room for multiple stages. But, in a emo-punk culture full of rowdy crowds, safety is a top priority. A Live Nation representative stated in a press release to Newsweek, “The safety of fans, artists and staff is thoroughly planned for among event organizers and in coordination with local authorities.”

When We Were Young is Too Good to Be True

Logistics concerns aside, fans are skeptical of When We Were Young because the lineup is simply amazing. Sixty-five bands, many of whom just recently reunited, are all playing in the same place on the same day. Live Nation secured the attention of every emo music fan with their lineup. When We Were Young is reminiscent of Warped Tour, except with an added bit of nostalgia. It’s safe to say that fans are holding their breath to see if this festival will be a yearly success.

Live Nation has assured fans that When We Were Young will be a great festival. The grounds absolutely have the capacity for multiple stages and a sea of people, and it’s quite likely that the shows will run smoothly. However, fans’ concerns about the event are important, and we hope that Live Nation will take account of them.

We’re excited to see Paramore, Bright Eyes, Avril Lavigne, Dashboard Confessional, and so many more emo bands perform. Do you want to go to When We Were Young festival in Las Vegas? Let us know in the comments!
