SZA’s “The Anonymous Ones” is Touching

SZA, 31-year-old alternative R&B artist, has done it again. Fans of SZA often rave about how her songs touch their hearts and “The Anonymous Ones” is no different. The track is featured on Marc Platt Production’s new movie, Dear Evan Hansenstarring Ben Platt. The movie, based on a broadway musical, takes us on a journey through teenage life, angst, romance, and grief. She captures these emotions beautifully on “The Anonymous Ones,” and perhaps is the shining light from a rather mediocre-reviewed movie.

SZA Reminds Us She’s a Star

SZA’s stardom has grown tremendously over the years, as the artist collaborated with Kendrick Lamar, Maroon 5, Doja Cat, and more. Fans know, however, that the artist is a skillful vocalist and songwriter by herself. “The Anonymous Ones” reinforces this fact. Featuring stellar falsettos and raw melodies, of course SZA’s rendition is a perfect example of her range. Her silky voice compliments the emotional undertones of the song and, moreover, the encompassing movie.

“The Anonymous Ones” is Sung Twice

“The Anonymous Ones,” though seemingly a flawless match for SZA, is actually a cover of the original. Amandla Stenberg, one of the stars of Dear Evan Hansen, helped write the track and sang it for the movie. SZA’s version is used in the end credits and played on the radio. The acoustics of Stenberg’s version differ from SZA’s electronic instrumentals, making two related but separate tracks. Both artists pour their hearts out into “The Anonymous Ones,” which is why the track has such high praises.

SZA’s Rendition is Emotional and Vulnerable

With heartrending lyrics like “Thе anonymous ones never lеt you see the hate they carry /All those anonymous ones never name the quiet pain they bury,” it’s easy to see why fans are emotional. “The Anonymous Ones” is a single for the underdogs and the forgotten, and SZA absolutely nails her rendition.
