SZA Self-Releases Three New Songs

On August 22, SZA released three new tracks via an anonymous SoundCloud account. The tracks titled “I Hate You”, “Joni”, and “Nightbird” are posted under an account listed as “.” with the location reading “nowhere, United States.” The account is confirmed to belong to SZA after she tweeted the link to the tracks, writing “Dumping random thoughts.” She later tweeted that her astrologist, Jade Sykes, influenced her to release the tracks at exactly 8:01 AM EST.

A day after the tracks dropped, SoundCloud removed them from the account. Fans tweeted SZA asking where they had gone. She responded saying, “I have no idea!!! No samples it’s all original music and nobody wrote on em but me. Somebody jus got me.” Later that day, SZA’s SoundCloud account once again featured her three new tracks.

All three tracks evoke the soulful, rich, and poignant style SZA has crafted. On these new tracks, she sings about her usual themes of intimacy, insecurity, and nostalgia. And as usual, the way her voice glides over the melodies feels angelic and effortless. “Joni” even includes a guitar sample of Elliot Smith’s “Angeles”.

These tracks follow her 2020 releases, “Hit Different” and “Good Days.” SZA teamed up with Doja Cat earlier this Spring for the hit song “Kiss Me More,” and joined Saint Jhn on “Just for Me,” featured on the Space Jam: A New Legacy soundtrack. In July, SZA debuted a song called “Shirt” on a livestream event in collaboration with Grey Goose. Fans have been begging for a recorded version and SZA responded, “She nex.”
