Netflix’s “Purple Hearts”

Carson returns to the big screen in a leading role for the new Netflix movie, “Purple Hearts,” out July 29. The movie’s Netflix description explains the plot vaguely: “An aspiring musician agrees to a marriage out of convenience with a soon-to-deploy Marine, but a tragedy soon turns their relationship all too real.”

Carson stars as Cassie alongside Nicholas Galitzine (Luke), best known for his role in Prime Video‘s Cinderella with Camilla Cabello. Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum directed the film, whose recent credits include Sneakerella and Dead to Me.

Sofia Carson on Instagram: “Five years ago, we started this journey together. Five years of dreaming, believing in, fighting for and creating our world of Purple Hearts, hand in hand every step of the way. My heart thanks you, forever. We’ve been dreaming of this night for five years… My Liz, we did it. And I cannot wait for the world to see the magic you captured💜 My Purple Heart is yours forever. @thisislizallen”

“Purple Hearts” by Sofia Carson

“Purple Hearts” by Sofia Carson is from the movie’s original soundtrack and is its promotional single. Universal Music Group, which houses legendary artists like Lady Gaga, BTS, Taylor Swift, Adele, Rihanna, and Ye, also distributes Carson’s song.

Carson quivers against the layered guitars with feelings of longing; it’s almost tear-jerking. She opens with, “We’re drowning in our eyes / Don’t know what we’ll find / I’m not sure, should we fly or fight this?/ We’re terrified.”

In the last chorus, her voice escalates, becoming repetitive, burnt-out, and wanting safety. Carson’s voice is full of echoes and determination. Her voice cracks and gives every step of the way, and it is simply breathtaking.
