There is nothing Minaj loves more than to trolls fans, so when she teased new music on TikTok with #Freaky, the internet quite literally exploded. Fans could not resist the rapper’s catchy and sexually-explicit lyricism, making it go TikTok viral before knowing the track’s legitimacy. It lead to endless discussions of if the song indicates a new album or if the artist is playing mind games.

However, the truth slowly unfolded to reveal a lot more including the song sampling legendary MC Hammer’s “U Can’t Touch This” will drop this Friday, August 12. And while the release date was finished, the track’s title remained a mystery.

That is until Minaj asked fans for help via Twitter with a whopping 204k vote turnout. However, due to trademark, the rapper was unable to use the superior vote and settled on the latter.

Minaj Returns to Film

In March 2022, the “Super Bass” rapper chatted with Joe Budden on Joe Budden TV and revealed upcoming projects and her acting endeavors. Her last movie role was in “The Angry Birds Movie 2” (2019) as the supporting character “Pinky.”

“Yes, I am working […] with a director right now regarding a movie,” Minaj told Budden. “I can’t wait to tell everybody about that. I’m really excited about that. It’s a bigger role than I’ve ever taken on. It’s a more in-depth role than I’ve ever taken on. I mean, it’s time, right? I can’t just keep doing those surface roles.”

Her other roles include “Ice Age: Continental Drift” (2012), “The Other Woman” (2014) with Cameron Diaz and Leslie Mann, and “Barbershop: The Next Cut” (2016) with Ice Cube.

In addition, Minaj is wrapping up her new 10-part docuseries (originally 6-part) with a still-unknown release date.

MTV Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award

Nicki Minaj will be honored with the Video Vanguard Award at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. According to MTV, the award is “presented to artists for their outstanding contributions and profound impact on music video and popular culture.”

From the rapper’s versatile discography with standout hits “Moment 4 Life,” “Chun-Li,” “Anaconda,” and collaborations “Tusa” with Karol G, “Side to Side” with Ariana Grande, and “Monster” with Kanye West, Rick Ross, and Jay-Z, Minaj’s impact on popular culture, pop music, and the music industry is immeasurable.

Some other award recipients are P!NK, J-LoBritney Spears, Beyoncé, and Rihanna. The most recent Video Vanguard recipient was Missy Elliot in 2019. Therefore, Minaj becomes one of only two black rappers to receive the MTV Video Vanguard Award in MTV history.

Young Money Reunion Concert with Drake and Lil Wayne

Drake enlisted Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj for the Young Money reunion concert  on August 6 at Drake’s October World Weekend. The show was originally  “Road to OVO Fest,” but Drake postponed the show to a positive COVID-19 diagnosis. “Negative test…positive outcome,” Drake wrote when announcing the rescheduled show.

During his performance, Drake stopped and said, “It’s been a long time since we’ve been here and been able to do this together. First and foremost, I just want to say tonight I got to stand in a crowd and watch two of the greatest musicians of all time. I’m so grateful; I’m so grateful to be a part of that team.”

Champagne Papi, Tunechi, and Barbie performed hits like “BedRock,” “Every Girl,” and “The Motto.” Minaj also gave fans an exclusive full performance of “Super Freaky Girl” ahead of its release. Minaj and Drake goofed off on stage (all in good faith!) while Lil Wayne was just happy to be there!
