Lizzo began her career breakthrough in 2019, when her song “Truth Hurts” was featured in the 2019 Netflix film, Someone Great. Subsequently, Lizzo’s fanbase grew through TikTok and spread worldwide. Importantly, the singer’s body positivity inspires many plus size women to be themselves and dress how they want to dress.

Following the 2022 People’s Choice Awards, Lizzo went home with the People’s Champion Award. The People’s Champion Award “recognizes a person who uses their platform to fight important social causes and embodies being a champion of the people” according to Billboard. Several people were confused as to why she would receive such an award. Let’s review the reasons why Lizzo’s 2022 was ‘Good As Hell’!

For The Big Grrrls

In August of 2020, Lizzo partnered with Amazon Studios for her own show, Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls. In detail, the reality show had contestants compete to be dancers for the singer. The show premiered on March 25th, 2022 and has already received an Emmy for Outstanding Competition Program on September 12th. This marks Lizzo’s first nomination and first win at an award ceremony.

Indeed, Lizzo was very emotional about this win. She broke barriers for all of the plus size women with this show. “When I was a little girl, all I wanted was to see me in the media. Someone fat like me, Black like me, beautiful like me,” she breaks down at the ceremony. In the trailer for the show, she says “Girls that look like me don’t get representation, time to pull up my sleeves and find them myself.”

Topping Charts

If theres one thing Lizzo furthermore dominated this year, it was her music. 2022 saw some of her biggest music releases, such as her fourth studio album, Special. Special became Lizzo’s first No. 1 on Billboard‘s Top Album Sales chart. It became her second top 10 after reaching No. 2 with Cuz I Love You in 2019.

Even more, her single “About Damn Time” dominated the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was alongside some of 2022’s biggest releases like “Break My Soul” by Beyoncé and “I Like You (A Happier Song)” by Post Malone.

Moreover, TikTok made the announcement that Lizzo is their Top Music Artist of 2022. Millions of users would learn her “About Damn Time” choreography, making the song their No. 4 top-trending song. The singer has 26 million TikTok followers. What’s more, she would gain the title of Top Music Artist based on total video views on the app. Notably, she beats Bad Bunny, Doja Cat, and Charlie Puth on the list of TikTok’s top 10 music artists.

Lizzo is ending her spectacular year with a bang. Previously, in October, the singer took to social media to announce that she will be releasing her HBO Max documentary, Love, Lizzo, on November 24th. Further, HBO Max describes it as following “three-time GRAMMY® Award-winning superstar singer, songwriter, rapper, flutist and actress Lizzo as she makes history shifting the sound, soul, and spirit of popular music and culture all while balancing the challenges of life, love and stardom.”

The documentary details the artist’s inspirational story of her rise to stardom. It’s a raw look into her life, even showing the sad reality of the misogynistic, racist, and fatphobic comments towards her. They began to film in 2019, Lizzo saying “There’s never a right time to start documenting and telling your story, and if I had waited to film this, then I wouldn’t have captured Coachella and the VMAs, and ‘Truth Hurts’ going number one, my life during the pandemic and the Grammys, and my arena tour now. I wouldn’t have gotten all of this footage that I think is just so important to my career.”

SNL Performance

On December 17th, Lizzo made her third Saturday Night Live appearance. Brought to the stage by host Austin Butler, the flutist stepped in place for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, who were unable to make it. Dressed in a silky white gown, Lizzo rocked it on stage with her performance of “Break Up Twice.” After an outfit change to a silver and gold dress, the singer-rapper brought in the holidays with a cover of “Someday at Christmas,” originally sung by Stevie Wonder.
