“Unholy” singer and Grammy-nominee Kim Petras goes back to basics with the acoustic release of “If Jesus Was A Rockstar.” Now, after Max Martin produced the studio version, the stripped-down version shines just as bright. Max Martin, the chart-topping master and renovator of pop music, has worked with the likes of Britney Spears, Celine Dion, Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, and many more.
Aside from her solo success, the German-native produced some iconic looks on her iHeart Jingle Ball tour as a special guest for Sam Smith (of course!)

If Kesha tried for a Teenage Dream era, this song would be its baby. A sleepy, subdued pop track brightened with feisty lyrics and Petras’s signature vibrato. But trade that Max Martin happy for some murky guitar strings. Her natural tone and musicality are the only fighting force against the stripped track.
“For me, religion and spirituality is such an intense topic because I grew up trans, not fitting into any religion,” she told Billboard. “All of my friends were pretty religious, and I kind of just wanted to write this song about how I wish religion would include me — and how it doesn’t, and how a lot of my friends in the LGBTQ community are forced to feel this way.”
Petras’s search for spirituality started with music like how others seek religion. “The song kinda says maybe if religion was cooler, then I would wanna be a part of it.”
The singer’s saving grace is finally paying off because she and Sam Smith are nominated for the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category at this year’s Grammy’s for their Billboard No.1 collaboration “Unholy.” With almost 600 million streams, the song jumped Petras’s career from a gay hyper pop icon to a pop culture phenomenon.
