Jorja Smith just announced that her forthcoming project, Be Right Back, will be out on May 14. To give fans a preview, she released a new single ahead of it, titled “Gone.”
The Tragic Story Behind “Gone”
Last month, Jorja Smith kicked off this new era with “Addicted” – although, at the time, it was just released as a single. After landing over three million views on YouTube and finding critical-acclaim, she is releasing her new song “Gone.” The singer announced that both songs will be included on Be Right Back.
In “Addicted,” Jorja talks about wanting her partner’s full attention and its melody is more upbeat than the other single released. Distinctly, Jorja wrote that one, “Gone,” about a tragic car accident in which one of her best friends lost their life. The mournful song is a tribute to that person, but it’s also for everyone that has lost a loved one.
“My God, I lost you at the corner. On God, I lost you in the moment. Why now and not a little later?. Tell me how the world seems to get along without you. Tell me how to keep my world moving on without you,” she expresses in the chorus.
Jorja’s Songs Are For Everyone
In addition, within a press release Jorja shared more details about the meaning of “Gone.” “There’s something about being able to write about one thing. For it to mean so many different things to others. I love that this song will be interpreted in different ways, depending on the experiences of the people listening. This one is just me asking why people have to be taken from us,” she explains about the painful song.
Although an official tracklist for Be Right Back has not been announced yet, she shared that the project will include eight songs, including these two. “It’s called Be Right Back because it’s just something I want my fans to have right now,” she says. “This isn’t an album and these songs wouldn’t have made it. If I needed to make these songs, then someone needs to hear them too.”
