On August 9th, EDM duo The Chainsmokers announced they will be giving away free housing to one lucky winner. They have also offered to pay the rent, the winner going rent free for a year. It will consist of a luxury New York City apartment, complete with its very own music studio. One the duo created themselves. Given the uniqueness of the contest, participants are only limited to those 21 years or older. They also must be US citizens, even though participants who reside in Alaska and Hawaii must be a “participant in the music industry”, as per EDM.com. As this contest can apply to anyone, contestants can only be emerging artists in the music industry.
Along with the contest creativity, its true inspiration is the early days of their career. The normal struggle of trying to make enough money to get buy. Most importantly, pay rent to keep a roof above their heads. Its also about giving back to the city of New York, a major influence in their career as a whole. Their mission: give back to someone else and give them the same experience they had as struggling artists. Also give someone a bigger picture of what living like a famous music duo is like.
Commenting on the contest, the group mentioned to Billboard how “for the longest time we worked out of a shoebox sized apartment making music everyday. We started our careers in New York City and our experiences really shaped us into who we are today. The city is fun and inspiring, but we also know all too well how expensive it can be to live there. Especially as a new artist.”
With the program accepting applications, it will be interesting to see who the lucky winner is once it is all said and done.
