Their Comeback

The band Arctic Monkeys dropped their new single and music video for, “There’d Better Be A Mirrorball” on August 29th. This is their first drop in 4 years, since they released “Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino” on May 11th, 2018.

The English indie rock band formed in 2002. They made history by having the fastest selling debut album in UK chart history with their album Whatever People Say I Am, I’m Not. They were big in the UK, however gained more global attention with their song “Do I Wanna Know?” which was certified platinum in the US. They’ve also won Best British Album twice, in the 2007 and 2008 BRIT awards.

Their Song

“There’d Better Be A Mirrorball” seems to start from where their last song, “Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino” left off. The song begins with slow piano and drums. It adds strings to add to the emotional intensity; it is a melancholy yet lighthearted song. Alex Turner, the lead singer/songwriter, guides the song with his powerful voice. The chorus sings, “So if you wanna walk me to the car/ You oughta know I’ll have a heavy heart/ So can we please be absolutely sure that there’s a mirrorball?”

The music video stars different clips of Alex Turner in different places singing the song, in both black and white as well as full color. It also shows short clips of the rest of the Arctic Monkeys. The video has a dreamy feeling, especially paired with the sereneness of Turner’s voice.

The song foreshadows their upcoming album, The Car, coming out October 21st, 2022. And if that’s not enough excitement, they’re going on tour starting September 4th, in Ireland, visiting some festivals like Primavera Sound, and eventually coming to the US and visiting California and even New York City in Brooklyn. Tickets can be purchased on their website, here.
