Selena Gomez took the stage at 30 Rock this weekend to host Saturday Night Live with musical guest, Post Malone. The Only Murders in the Building star delivered a clever monologue, declaring she’s single and looking for love. Maybe just not within someone on the SNL cast. During her monologue, she even busted out a spot on Miley Cyrus impression that was a highlight of the night. By the end, she had the audience joined in song, singing “I love you, you love me…” calling all the way back to her Barney days.
Selena’s first sketch is a spoof of the popularized Japanese TV show, “Old Enough.” In the show, young toddlers practice being independent by completing errands all by themselves. In this version, a woman (Selena Gomez) asks her long-term boyfriend (Mikey Day) to run a few errands for her without her help. Comparing men to babies may not be a new concept, but it pays off in this hilarious sketch.
Selena utilized her Only Murders in the Building co-star and SNL alum Steve Martin for a pre-taped sketch. Martin plays the inventor of the whoopie cushion along with several other novelty toys. Selena Gomez plays the narrator of a documentary about the inventor and Aidy Bryant plays the object of Martin’s affection, whose unfortunate life inspired his inventions.
Posty’s First Time at SNL
Post Malone made his SNL debut with two songs from his upcoming album, Twelve Carat Toothache. First, he performed “Cooped Up” in a head-to-toe black leather look, sharing the stage with Roddy Rich.
For his second performance, Post Malone tapped one of his favorite artists, Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold. The live rendition of “Love/Hate Letter to Alcohol features Pecknold behind Posty singing in a choir.
Post Malone appeared in a couple of sketches as well. First, rapping about “dude nudes” and hacking into his girlfriend’s phone in the “Intuitions” sketch. Punkie Johnson also raps quite impressively about a “catch-his-ass-recipe” as she successfully convinces Gomez her boyfriend is cheating.
He also appears in the last sketch of the night as a giant baby. Selena and Post both break character in this one but it’s just wild enough to keep things going.
Overall, both Selena Gomez and Post Malone brought great talent to this week’s episode of SNL. And appearances from Steve Martin, Fleet Foxes, and Roddy Rich made for an extra special time.
