Olivia Dean and Messy
Singer-songwriter Olivia Dean might make 2024 a big year for her—as if 2023 wasn’t already a huge landmark in her career. An East London singer-songwriter, she’s been around for a few years, and is finally starting to receive more recognition.
2023 saw Olivia Dean make huge waves for herself. In June, she released her album, Messy. Despite having a catalog that dates back to 2018, Messy is Dean’s debut full-length. Clocking in at only 35 minutes, the album is made of 12 tracks. Impressively, Messy touches so many different aspects of neo soul effortlessly.
One of its pre-release singles, “Dive,” is a standout track. Two months ago, Dean sang it live on The Graham Norton Show with the stirring vocal skills and understated stage presence that make her all the more remarkable.
One of the last few songs on the album, “I Could Be A Florist,” is probably Messy’s most beautifully sounding track, production-wise. While, at 1 minute and 21 seconds, it is far too short, its length is ultimately part of the beauty it paints.
The title track, “Messy,” conveys Dean’s offering comfort about being messier than you wanted to be in life. Part of Dean’s comfort is admitting that she too is “a little bit messy.”
Overall, the album is a cool gust of air, steadily flowing through you, meant to soothe and move.
2024 Brit Award Nominations
For the 2024 Brit Awards in March, Olivia Dean has been nominated for three different categories. She’s a contender for Artist of the Year, as well as Best New Artist. She’s also up for Pop Act.
For Artist of the Year, Dean is up against names like Dua Lipa, Central Cee, Fred again.. and RAYE. In Best New Artist, her name is thrown into the ring with the likes of RAYE and PinkPantheress. Notably, for Pop Act, Dean’s fellow nominees are Calvin Harris, Charlie XCX, Dua Lipa and RAYE.
The notoriety her competition has is a testament to the neo soul singer herself. That her name can stand against them illustrates her upward motion.
