MUNA Trust Themselves With “Anything But Me”

MUNA - "MUNA" Album Cover MUNA’s New Era Continues To Impress With “Anything But Me”

American trio, MUNA, has been surprising us with their creamy pop-rock tracks since their 2017 debut album “About U.”  Since then, the group of friends from the University of Southern California has only kept mesmerizing.  In 2019, their hit “Number One Fan” swept through the headphones of every indie-pop music lover.  Now, after leaving longtime label RCA Records, Pheobe Bridgers’ “Saddest Factory” record label houses the group.  From this, MUNA released “Silk Chiffon” with label head Pheobe Bridgers.  The song was an experimental pivot for the group and received much excitement for what was next.  Recently, they debuted the second single, “Anything But Me”, from their self-titled third studio album.

Their Newest Act

With Stereogum, MUNA says, “‘Anything But Me’ is a song about leaving a partnership simply because it doesn’t feel right,” about the new single.  The track produced by them is an optimistic take on leaving a relationship.  “The song embodies the lightness and a playfulness that floods in when you realize that there’s no lock on the door, no one’s holding you back — you can untie the knot and skip into the sunset whenever you’re ready.”  says MUNA.  The lightness from breaking out of Stockholm Syndrome is the energy that glows from this track.

First, the track is full of cheesy-grin-inducing synths.  They are heavy, at the forefront of this song, and pump the track full of enthusiasm.  Absolutely, you can’t help but want to spin around singing “Anything But Me” with this song.  Altogether it’s a showing of MUNA’s ability to work with the current 80’s synth trend happening in music right now – with artists like The Weeknd and Dua Lipa.  The group has always had a close relationship with this sound.  However, “Anything But Me” shows how they have created a musical aesthetic synonymous with them while keeping it fresh.

Check out the music video for MUNA’s latest track “Anything But Me” below, and listen to their third studio album, MUNA, on June 24th.
