Alessia Cara’s New Era Begins With “Sweet Dream” & “Shapeshifter”

Alessia Cara has officially kicked off her new era. She released two brand new singles “Sweet Dream” and “Shapeshifter.”

Alessia Shows a New Side of Her

The two new tracks show us a new side of Alessia Cara. She’s known for her hits “Scars To Your Beautiful,” “Stay,” and “Here” which all showcase her powerful vocals combined with meaningful lyrics. The new songs follow that path, but they also give us a more modern and experimental Alessia.

“Sweet Dream” came out as the lead single out of the two, with an accompanying music video. In it, Alessia rocks multiple outfits while explaining how life gets much easier when she’s sleeping. It’s a fun and lively video – which just makes us excited to see what else she has in store for her fans.

“The theme of duality is recurring on this next album, so it made sense to release two songs to introduce both ends of the thread,” Alessia tells Complex. “The first side being ‘Sweet Dream’ represents the hardship and helplessness surrounding my last couple of years. It’s about insomnia and the hoops my brain jumps through at night while I’m supposed to be asleep. Never fun!”

Amy Winehouse Inspired “Shapeshifter”

Alessia explains that “Shapeshifter,” which is smoother and jazzier than “Sweet Dreams,” is “witty and sophisticated in a way that I feel represents the more mature and light-hearted parts of the album”. “It’s an extremely confident and sassy song. It’s not the most positive song, but it represents the half of the album that symbolizes confidence. The growing that I did during that time… I now look at life, and songwriting, with a lightness,” she explains to BuzzFeed.

Alessia also shared how Amy Winehouse – one of her musical idols – inspired “Shapeshifter”. “I got to make this song with Salaam Remi — a legend who’s worked with Miguel, and Lauryn Hill, and Amy Winehouse, my idol. I was super sick, but he only had one day, so I traveled down to Miami to work with him…Told him I was Italian, and he started playing this melody on his guitar. It immediately inspired me,” she adds.
