Swedish 80s colossal hit band ABBA mark their return to the music industry with their third single of the year, Just A Notion. Fans expected new music for more than nearly 30 years, when in 1994 the band released the album Thank You For The Music. The hopeful, upbeat song is the third single of the pop group’s upcoming album, Voyage. ABBA published the album on November, 4th. To mask their absence before it, the band released a Live Album in 2014 of their concert at Wembley.
Just A Notion
Before Just A Notion, Agnetha Faltskog, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad released the singles Don’t Shut Me Down and I Still Have Faith In You. And if the first two singles had stunned hardcore fans, with tones quite far from what we remember being ABBA, Just A Notion is a wonderful return to the musicality of the band’s heyday. The single is, in fact, very reminiscent and cheerful. The piano returns as a central, lively and entertaining musical element. The perfectly harmonised choirs of the two As (Agnetha and Anni-Frid) also return.
The song was originally recorded in late 1978 for one of ABBA’s most successful album, Voulez-Vous. Unfortunately, it never left the recording room. “Why did we decide against it? In hindsight, I don’t have a clue,” affirmed Björn. “So it’s a mystery and will remain a mystery.”
ABBA’s return to their origin
The pace is evidently more sustained than it was that of the two previous singles. And fans are euphoric for this return to the band’s origins. Although they appreciated the innovation, the tones of Just A Notion had a completely different impact on the public and on critics, who praise the band’s leap into the past and the references to the good, old “ABBA genre.” In fact, the song marks a return to the carefree and joyful rhythms of late 70s disco music.
