Troye Sivan’s “Something To Give Each Other” Is His Best Album Yet

Troye Sivan’s third studio album, 'Something To Give Each Other,' is a celebration of sex, dance, sweat, community, queerness, love and friendship.

Since his last LP five years ago, Troye Sivan revisions his latest heartbreak (Something To Give Each Other) in a myriad of glossy dance numbers laced with desire and queer celebration. Despite the social media storm surrounding the out-of-pocket “Rush” and his special edition gloryhole vinyl release, the Australian pop star is his most authentic.

If anything, the shock value of drool-worthy men generated a flurry of dance trends—and surprise collaboration with Sabrina Bahsoon, better known as “Tube Girl”—especially with the genius sample of Bag Raider’s 2008 hit “Shooting Stars“ featured on Sivan’s “Got Me Started.”

“The world can be a scary, dark, sad place,” Troye said on Instagram, celebrating his new release. “I really hope this music brings you even the tiniest bit of joy this week, and into the future. Thank you for listening, watching, loving, responding. There’s so many people in the world, so many experiences, so much pleasure in you, and all around us. Let yourself enjoy.”

Taking A Deeper Look At Troye Sivan’s Something To Give Each Other

In conversation with Apple Music, Sivan broke down the “10 stories, 10 moments” which took him two and a half years—from COVID to filming the HBO limited series The Idol—to complete the album.

And, while the promotional singles amassed over 250 million streams globally, the meat of the album is a soft sparkle of pop perfection. Half of the beauty behind Sivan’s latest effort is that sadness is one of many variables guiding the story, which oversaturated his past. Where “Still Got It” and Can’t Go Back, Baby” somberly reflect on the what-ifs of love, “How To Stay With You” is about getting that groove back—and you feel it through the synthesized harmonies. There’s much room to embrace awkward moments, especially on “Honey,” which confusingly utilizes prayer-like incantations to confess one’s feelings.

The other half is that spontaneity gets equal recognition. “Silly” is that breather track that shouldn’t be taken seriously, but Sivan’s falsetto makes it an instant repeat track. But Guitarricadelafuente’s contribution to “In My Room” became reality when Sivan DMed the Spanish singer after meeting at dinner.

Discussing the five-year gap between albums, he told Fallon, “It wasn’t intentional. […] It just took a long time. I’m genuinely, like, this is the most proud I’ve ever been of anything.” To celebrate the release of Something To Give Each Other, Sivan shared the official music video for album track “One Of Your Girls,” which features Sivan in drag dancing alongside actor and musician Ross Lynch.
