“The Hunger Games” Prequel: “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes”

It’s been nearly eight years since we were transported to the country of Panem. This fall, we return to where it all began for The Hunger Games. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is set to release this November! Here’s what we know.

Uncovering the Origins of President Snow in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

Whereas The Hunger Games took a hunter and forced her to act for survival, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes does the exact opposite. Following Coriolanus Snow, otherwise known to us as President Snow, this prequel gives a riveting background to the cold-hearted villain and the beginnings of The Hunger Games.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes takes place during the 10th Hunger Games. In the trailer, we watch a young Snow (played by Tom Blyth) mentor Lucy Gray Baird (played by Rachel Zegler), a District Twelve tribute known for her songs and performances. Their relationship builds as Snow plays the mentor role that we saw Haymitch in during Katniss’s own Hunger Games. In the short two-and-a-half-minute trailer, we are transported in time to the beginnings of Panem—before the extraordinary architecture, flamboyant outfits, and extreme wealth. Back to the roots, where it all began.

The Hunger Games series was a trademark for book-lovers from 2012 to 2015. An entire fandom was born, rooting for the classic Peeta/Gale love triangle. Known for its world-building, complex characters, and gripping storyline, The Hunger Games had captured the attention of fans around the world. Those fans are all eager for the world to return to theaters. They are also ready to explore the intriguing story of the origins for the deep-rooted evil that is Coriolanus Snow.
