As A-list nominees dazzle the Golden Globes red carpet, let’s appreciate some fashion moments and career milestones from popular talent. The award show is the first of the season and the new year. Everything Everywhere All At Once has all the hype, with six entries from Jamie Lee Curtis to leading lady Michelle Yeoh nominations.
However, “The Banshees of Inisherin” takes the top spot among films with eight nominations and “Abbott Elementary” earns an A+ on the TV side with five.
For fashion, it was sink or swim. Or rather, women dripping in custom haute couture and atelier and men snoozing in bland tuxedos. Except for a few (wink, wink, Billy Porter!)
Now Is It Fashion?
Red carpet correspondent and Orange Is The New Black star Laverne Cox bodies a blue and gold dress from John Galliano SS 2007. And even though LA saw rain, Natasha Lyonne’s conservative black Givenchy number was far from safe with her dazzling David Webb accessories.
Trans sister and Golden Globe winner Michaela Jae Rodriguez oozes boss babe energy in a deep blue, glossy Balmain dress with tons of texture. Also, news alert(!), Rodriguez is releasing an EP this year. Her POSE co-star Billy Porter blew menswear to, well… Billy Porter level with his Christian Siriano fuchsia tuxedo overlay gown. The actor also announced that music is underway.
Netflix’s Wednesday superstar Jenna Ortega had a brief moment with Selena Gomez on the Golden Globes red carpet. The Golden Globe nominee wore a new rose gold Gucci dress that’s equal parts flowy, skintight and sexy. And Gomez stunned in a royal purple Valentino dress with poufy sleeves and a sleek high ponytail. (Does anybody else think Jenna Ortega’s hair gives them 2000s Halle Berry vibes?)
White Lotus icon and American treasure Jennifer Coolidge wore a custom back sequin Dolce & Gabbana dress with her signature big blonde hair.
(Last minute arrival: Rihanna wears flamboyant Schiaparelli Haute Couture in a fashionably late entrance to the Golden Globes. The singer is nominated for Best Original Song, “Lift Me Up,” for Black Panther.)
Worst Dressed List
Gosh, say it with me, gentlemen: “There is more to black-tie than tuxedos!”
What are we going to do with men? They don’t get the vibe, ever! Award shows are just a painstaking reminder of their lack of adventure and character development beyond the movie screen. Austin Butler and Donald Glover lead the menswear snooze list. And Butler opted to reveal he went through five vocal coaches to nail Elvis Presley’s voice. Thanks?
But at least Glover opted for a robe underneath to feel “more comfortable for three hours…[?]” Whatever floats his boat. The only good news he shared was that Childish Gambino is back in the studio (but solely for fun at the moment.) Glover received his third consecutive nomination for his role in FX’s Atlanta.
Best Dressed
Lastly, shout out to Abbot Elementary‘s Quinta Brunson for rocking another Siriano creation with fuchsia and black tulle pinched and tucked into a stunning, form-fitting mermaid-tail silhouette.
