Sarah Proctor Explores Heartache on ‘I Don’t Know What Love Will Do’

UK artist Sarah Proctor has released her second single of the year, “I Don’t Know What Love Will Do.” Her new song oozes heartache just as much as her April release, but this time delivers it in a stripped-back fashion. “I Don’t Know What Love Will Do” is quiet and vulnerable, taking on a bittersweet moodiness along the way.

Beautifully Haunting & Hauntingly Beautiful

The UK artist’s single begins with somber, beautifully haunting piano chords. They give way to Proctor’s smooth, whispery voice that seamlessly contorts around vulnerable lyrics.

We’re caught in the middle
Gone too far to understand
All these plans I only noticed
Who were on the surface

In a whispery tone, she sings of uncertainty and loss, asking uncomfortable questions along the way. Even if Proctor doesn’t find an answer, she has support from fellow artist Jolé. He balances out Proctor’s vocals with his own, adding a sense of depth to this refreshingly minimalistic track. His love for folk and electronic music is made manifest on “I Don’t Know What Love Will Do.” The duo flawlessly fuses electronica with a subtle, magnetic piano loop alongside their harmonized vocals.

Sarah Proctor Brings A Modern UK Twist

With “I Don’t Know What Love Will Do,” Proctor evokes a particularly entrancing and somber sound. Her single comes across as a modern twist on the trip hop sound that defined some other UK artists of the ‘90s, like Dido and Massive Attack. Echoing beats, seamless harmonies, and subtlety all lend themselves to the oddly comforting gloom that characterizes the genre.

The Billingham-based artist has a long history of moody, heartfelt lyrics that dance between vulnerability and introspection. In an interview with Bringin’ It Backwards, she talks about how she writes music “for everyone who has loved and not felt it in return. I think as humans we can sometimes get caught between connections, where it’s not just friendship but not quite love, it’s somewhere in between.” Proctor’s latest single is no exception to the rule.
