Sam Smith’s Holiday Cheer in “Night Before Christmas”

“Unholy” singer Sam Smith brought warmth to the holidays with last year’s original single, “Night Before Christmas.” Not yet off the hype train with Kim Petras, the singer pivoted in a totally different direction with this single compared to their sexy smash hit. In typical Sam Smith tradition, the song shines through the blues and lovely harmonies to show a true tenderness that the holidays know all too well.

To celebrate the new year, Sam Smith released their fourth studio album, Gloria, on January 27, 2023, via Capital Records. Fans can only hope for a similar celebration in 2024.

“Night Before Christmas” By Sam Smith

Christmas songs aren’t anything new to the Grammy-winning artist. Actually, they dropped the Christmas EP, The Holly & The Ivy, shortly after the release of their third album, Love Goes (2020). The EP included a bundle of renditions of Christmas classics and original tracks. “Night Before Christmas” was the newest addition to Smith’s holiday collection.

They took to Instagram to explain this new Christmas original, “Night Before Christmas.” “This song was written by me and my beautiful and inspiring friend [Cherry Ghost’s] Simon Aldred,” Sam Smith wrote. “We wanted to make a Christmas song that felt like LOVE on Christmas Eve. I hope you can feel the warmth we felt when making it and I hope it gets you excited for the holiday season.”

The country and western-influenced track has a lot of heartfelt guitar strings and lyrics. “Come rest your weary head on my chest / The year is behind us, we’re still at our best / The magic of Christmas is what’s coming next / So lean in and kiss me and all of the rest,” Smith sings.

The Power Of “Unholy”

Last year, the queer artist made history alongside transgender pop princess Kim Petras. They scored their first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with the TikTok smash hit “Unholy.” This achievement made Petras the first openly transgender artist to secure the No. 1 spot. The track stayed atop the Spotify Global chart for nearly a month. Currently, “Unholy” has over one billion streams on Spotify alone.

To top off the success of “Unholy,” Petras accepted Variety’s Innovators of the Year award at Variety’s Hitmakers Brunch. Sam Smith however was absent, but the duo received the recognition they deserved for their studio magic.
