Rapper Young Dolph Dies by Shooting

Young Dolph, whose real name is Adolph Thornton, Jr., was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon while at a local bakery. According to law enforcement, while the Memphis rapper was inside Makeda’s Butter Cookies, an unknown suspect drove up and shot him. Dolph, 36, is survived by a son, daughter, and partner, Mia Jaye.

The King of Memphis

Dolph, justly nicknamed the “King of Memphis,” is known for giving back to his community. He was a regular participant in the Memphis Athletic Ministries charity, scheduled to hand out turkeys just hours after his untimely death. He’s also a well-known philanthropist in the area, donating $25,000 to his former high school.

Condolences from Peers

Friends, family, and fans are sending out messages of condolence and respect. Megan Thee Stallion, another Houston native, writes on Twitter, “Rest In Peace to my friend, a true legend, Dolph.” Other hip-hop artists, such as Rick Ross, Lil Yachty, Chance the Rapper, and Fivio Foreign, share their condolences on social media. Among these posts are also messages of strength and compassion for the Houston rapper’s family and fans.

Multiple Near-Death Experiences

Young Dolph, in an interview with Forbes, explained his music. He said, “I know what the streets want to hear, I know what the street’s going through… It ain’t nothing; it’s my real life.” The rapper came close with death many times over the years. In 2017, the rapper was shot at twice, undergoing surgery one of those times. Instead of hiding, Young Dolph released music about his experiences. “100 Shots,” consequently, details one of the times someone tried to take his life.

Young Dolph’s Talent

APA, Dolph’s talent agency, released a statement on his untimely passing. They write, “The world has lost an icon, a great man and beloved artist who has been taken too soon. His dedication, drive, hard work and loyalty to all those around him always came first and he will be deeply missed.”  #RIPYoungDolph is trending on Twitter and other social medias as fans continue to send messages of grief and mourning.
