Oh Wonder Can’t Fake It on “Don’t Let The Neighbourhood Hear”

Oh Wonder, British alternative-pop duo, recently released a heartbreaking new single, “Don’t Let The Neighbourhood Hear.” Stripped back melodies, mellow electronics, and painstaking lyrics make their new track a must-listen. The single precedes their fourth studio album, 22 Break.

A Movie-Like Experience from Oh Wonder

Released on October 1st, “Don’t Let The Neighborhood Hear” has earned high praises. The black and white music video features the now-married couple in a visually confining plain. The video captures the tensions, worries, and contraries of imminent break-ups. Anthony and Josephine Vander West, of course skilled in their craft, immerse us in a movie-like experience.

Potent lyrics let us know how stressful a relationship can be, especially in confined spaces during this time. The duo sings, “Am I not good enough to be loved by you?” over a beautiful melody. Of course, it’s hard not to feel emotional when listening to these two sing. Oh Wonder, surrounded by fire and floods in their video, contrast gorgeously. Their voices flow much better together than the relationship described in the song.

Simplicity is Key

The biggest star of “Don’t Let The Neighborhood Hear,” however, is its simplicity. In a statement about 22 Break made earlier this year, Oh Wonder said, “We nearly broke up last year. It sounds dramatic, but it’s the truth. ’22 Break’ [may be] the first break-up album in history written and recorded with the person you’re breaking up with. It’s awkward, it’s vulnerable, but it also saved us.” This single, in particular, demonstrates just how explosive and heartbreaking relationships can be – especially as they near a possible end. Anthony and Josephine sing about their bitterness with lyrics such as “Wish that I could make me smile / ‘Cause I can’t even fake it… / So don’t let the neighbourhood hear / Just how fucked up it’s got in here”.

Oh Wonder recently released 22 Break on all streaming platforms, and we’re more than excited to listen. How about you? Let us know in the comments!
