One of the most iconic albums of all time, the Thriller album released in November 1982, and is still notorious. Michael Jackson was 24 years old, and influenced many artists with Thriller, along with his others. In detail, classic album contains hits such as “Beat It”, “Billie Jean”, “Wanna Be Startin’ Something”, and of course title track “Thriller.”

Sony Music Entertainment is teaming up with the Michael Jackson estate to create an official documentary, detailing the making of the album. The untitled film in progress is being directed by Nelson George—a music historian, journalist, and documentary filmmaker.

Although there isn’t much detail yet, Deadline reports that George’s documentary will feature “never-before-seen footage and candid interviews,” chronicling “the point in Jackson’s career that launched the singer into mega-stardom and created a pop culture phenomenon that is woven through the culture and continues to influence the worlds of music, television, dance, fashion and more to this day.”

‘Cause This Is Thriller

By the end of 1983, Thriller became the world’s best-selling album, having sold 32 million copies. It remains the best-selling album of all time, having sold over 70 million copies worldwide. The album is highly recognizable for the music video for title track, ‘Thriller”. The music video features Michael Jackson watching himself on a date in the movie theater as a werewolf. His date runs out of the theater and as he chases after her on the street, he sings and dances, even with zombies.

Michael’s choreography in the music videos and all of his other videos and live performances were way ahead of his time. In addition, he has become a trendsetter in dance and music, and still remains as a key influence for many artists. The 13 minute music video is one of the most iconic of all time.

Notably, “Billie Jean” from the album is one of Michael’s most popular songs of the 20th century. It’s certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and has sold over 14 million copies worldwide.

Previously, there was a documentary about the album, called Making Of Michael Jackson’s Thriller. It was a 45 minute long documentary featuring interviews with the director, John Landis, the make-up artist, Rick Baker, and the King of Pop himself.

Additionally, two other documentaries were made focusing on a Michael Jackson movie: Bad 25 and Michael Jackson’s Journey from Motown to Off the Wall. Spike Lee directed both documentaries.

Fans are excited for the upcoming documentary and can’t wait to hear more about it. There has been no announcement regarding the expected release date.
