Artist Overview: Fred again..
Fred Gibson, known as Fred again.., is a London-based producer who produces pop and rap projects. He has worked alongside many famous performers such as Ed Sheeran, FKA Twigs, Charli XCX, Stefflon Don, etc. Fred again.. started producing in 2014 and has multiple works filled with crossovers of EDM and pop. As a DJ, he has bright electric dance tracks which are very unique. A lot of UK artists feature in his music, instead of the usual USA pop titans. Gibson is nominated for a total of 5 GRAMMYs, including Best Dance/ Electronic Album and Best New Artist.
Fred again.. blew up during the pandemic when he released the song “‘Marea (we’ve lost dancing).” It samples the voice of an American DJ: The Blessed Madonna. In the small clip of her voice, she talks about how important it is to dance in that isolated era of the pandemic. The Blessed Madonna has worked with several artists, such as Dua Lipa, on various remixes. “Marea (we’ve lost dancing)” is a hypnotic EDM song about letting go and dancing. Fred Again.. created music that was globally received, establishing himself as a household name by collaborating with various artists. Some songs he worked on include “16 Shots” by Stefflon Don, “We Are Bulletproof: The Eternal” by BTS, “ and a personal favorite, “Solo (feat. Demi Lovato)” by Clean Bandit.
Personal Catalog
Fred again.. has four solo projects to this date and two collaborative albums. The first collaborative work came out in 2020 and is called Gang, featuring Headie One. Brian Eno is the artist on Fred again..’s Secret Life. Gibson’s versatility on his music is admirable because although it is EDM, he takes different elements from different genres. Utilizing this technique creates unique sounds and addictive instrumentals. “Billie (loving arms)” is a favorite song for many out of his catalog. According to Total Ntertainment, Gibson said, “For me, this song is about allowing people to help you, when you need it most. Like last year I felt like that was made almost impossible for us to do in some ways. I mean just the physical touch of someone throwing themselves around you can really cure us of a whole lot I think.”
This message of accepting physical touch from others is appreciated by many. This came out during the global pandemic. It was a perfect way to describe the feeling everyone felt: loneliness. Letting someone hug you can cure your sadness and it’s important to note that, although he is a DJ, there are significant meanings behind Fred Again..’s work.
Fred again.. is Not Just a DJ
Gibson’s most recent album, Secret Life is a combination of multiple songs with Brian Eno. The best song off this album is “Enough.” It has an ethereal, floating, calming vibe to it. There are not many words in the track, but it feels like a journey of some sort. This is an overall favorite project of Fred again..’s because of the calm, serene feeling found when listening to it. Seeing Secret Life live would be quite the experience for fans as they feel the bass in their chests and are part of a crowd experiencing the show together.
Fred again.. has made his own mark on the industry by putting personal stories behind the lyrics, which can be different from typical DJs. It will be interesting to see if he wins any GRAMMY awards on the biggest night in the music industry. Do you think Fred again.. will win any GRAMMYs? Let us know in the comments.
