Sweet Tooth

’Sweet Tooth’ was the last song written for ‘MOSS,’” Hawke explains. “The lyrics were written in Atlanta while filming, but Christian [Lee Hutson] and I recorded the first demo in Nashville. “When we finished the first recording session, I felt this eruption of joy, and I knew this feeling had to be on the record.”

In addition to Sweet Tooth, the single “Thérèse” was released in July. It has everything, from dreamy strings to heavy guitar solos, and beyond that, the new song is an ekphrastic poem. An ekphrastic poem is poetry about visual art, something that Hawke masters in her introspective new single about a 1938 oil painting by French artist Balthasar Klossowski (otherwise known as Balthus), titled Thérèse Dreaming. The painting is of Thérèse Blanchard, a twelve-year-old girl at the time, sitting in a chair, stretching, with her cat drinking milk beside her.

The Video for Sweet Tooth

Hawkes released a dreamy music video to follow the playful song about growing pains. Dropping the same day of the song release. It stars herself and her friends. Hawke explained how she explored and reevaluated aspects of herself as a grown-up through the process of writing the songs on “Moss.”

Maya Hawke Releases “Sweet Tooth” and  it has a lively video with visuals and embraces the melancholic themes of the song. It follows Hawke visiting the dentist. They slip on a mask, putting her to sleep. She proceeds to dream about her friends holding a memorial for her on the beach.

Sweet Tooth was born out of conversations with Maya about the song, the album, and the unique feel of sweetness, cavity, death, and joy,” said Celine Sutter, the music video director. “We discussed care, caretaking, and childhood adult friendships.”
