Lizzo’s “About Damn Time” Tops Billboard Charts

Lizzo reaches the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for the second time with her single, “About Damn Time”. The track released in April and preceded her fourth album, Special, which dropped July 15th.

The Last Track to Complete Her Album

In an interview with Audacy, Lizzo admits that “About Damn Time” is the last to complete her album. She says, “My album was done in my eyes, and this was kind of like a Hail Mary song, because I didn’t really have anything on my album yet that felt like ‘Good as Hell’ to me.” Lizzo further explains that she wanted a song that could turn someone’s day around and make them feel better with just a listen. “About Damn Time,” consequently, is another lighthearted and encouraging track with an infectious and catchy chorus.

Lizzo Talks About the Making of “About Damn Time”

Though “About Damn Time” is the most well-known song off Special, it took a while to write. On Tiktok – and in response to a Billboard comment – Lizzo explains that there are 50 versions of “About Damn Time.” The clip shows the 34-year-old in the studio, recording the final chorus of the track. Of all 50 versions of the chorus, Lizzo picked the right one – as the song ascends to the top of the Billboard Hot 100. In her Audacy interview, she further explains the feelings she wanted to convey through the song. She says, “I think life had thrown some major traumas and hard experiences at us, especially globally these last few years. And I wanted to write a song that allowed us to take a moment and celebrate our survival, and celebrate how far we’ve come”.

Her Second Chart Topper

“About Damn Time” is Lizzo’s second Billboard #1 hit. The first, “Truth Hurts,” charted at #1 for seven weeks. Along with these two chart-toppers, Lizzo’s fourth studio album, Special, debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200. The Houston and Minneapolis native is active on Tiktok, Twitter, and Instagram, where she celebrates her recent chart successes and posts about her musical process.
