Japanese Breakfast Recruits The Sopranos’ Actor For “Savage Good Boy” Video

Japanese Breakfast shared the latest piece of her forthcoming album Jubilee, “Savage Good Boy.”

Japanese Breakfast Shares the Last Piece off Jubilee

Jubilee is set to release on June 4. It will include ten original songs, out of which five are already out. “Savage Good Boy” joins the list of released songs. It was just shared last Friday. For the music video of the song, Michelle Zauner, otherwise known as Japanese Breakfast, recruited Michael Imperioli from The Sopranos to star in it with her.

“Savage Good Boy” came from a headline I read about billionaires buying bunkers,” she shares in a statement. “Examining that specific type of villainy interested me. Found myself adopting the perspective of a rich man coaxing a young woman to come to live with him underground, attempting to rationalize his almost impossible share of greed and miserliness. I knew I wanted the music video to be a pretty literal interpretation of that idea.”

She continues, “I wanted to juxtapose images of this post-apocalyptic, industrial bunker with the lightness and extravagance of rococo fashion and set design. My cinematographer, Adam Kolodny, and I were aiming for that balance. Chan Wook Park’s The Handmaiden, Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon, and Sally Potter’s Orlando really inspired us.”

The Making of the “Savage Good Boy” Music Video

In the self-directed music video, Zauner projects her vision flawlessly. She stars as the young girl living in a mansion with an older man, who is Imperioli. They look like they have a normal relationship while they enjoy dinner together. Only after they finish, she tricks him into thinking she’s approaching to kiss him. Just then, she executes a deathly bite on him, killing him instantly.

In a live Q&A hosted by Zauner before the video premiere, Imperioli talked about acting in a music video as opposed to his film and television work. “There’s more freedom and you try to embody the spirit of the song and the music,” he said. “That’s fun! As an actor, it’s a very different approach to what you’re usually doing.”

Japanese Breakfast plans to tour behind Jubilee this Fall, kicking it off by playing three shows with Mannequin Pussy at Union Transfer. They’ll also play Harrisburg Midtown Arts Center on Sunday, September 12 with Luna Li and Hot Jam Factory.
