Rap fans know that Gunna & Lil Baby are one of the best duos in the rap game. Between ‘Close Friends’, ‘Chanel (Go Get It)’, ‘Sold Out Dates’, and many more hits, it’s hard to pick a favorite. But ‘Drip Too Hard’ might be one of their best collaborations yet.

The single came out on September 12th, 2018, and was certified diamond on the 4th anniversary; September 12th, 2022. This achievement is one that only a few in the rap game can say that they’ve accomplished. Rappers and hip hop artists like Eminem, Drake, Macklemore, Outkast, and The Notorious B.I.G are just some of the people who have had certified diamond tracks. Both Lil Baby and Gunna have left their marks in the music industry multiple times.

Gunna’s Rise to Diamond

Sergio Giavanni Kitchens, a.k.a Gunna, started making music at the age of 15. Growing up in Atlanta, him and his family went through many hardships that inspired the music he makes today. In 2013 he dropped his first mixtape, Hard Body, which didn’t top any charts but helped garner attention towards his music. Young Thug and Gunna met in 2015 through King Troup, whom Thug wrote a song about after his death in 2015. Thug signed him to YSL Records, and from then on started the journey.

Wunna’s first mixtape under YSL was Drip Season, which was released in October of 2016. In 2017, he came out with Drip Season 2 and Drip or Drown. In 2018, he released Drip Season 3, which I personally think is his best album (ever). He’s come out with multiple other albums since. His most recent album, DS4Ever, released on January 7th, 2022. The album reached number 1 on the US Billboard 200, making it his second number 1 album after his album Wunna.

In addition, Gunna does his part in the fashion industry, with unique and colorful (not to mention expensive) outfits. In the diamond song “Drip Too Hard,” he proclaims “Designer to the ground, I can barely spell the names.” Fashion is important to Gunna and it shows. Drip is his middle name!

Lil Baby’s Journey

Dominique Armani Jones, otherwise known as Lil Baby, also grew up in Atlanta. The 27 year old was well known in Atlanta as a big time drug dealer. In his newest documentary, Untrapped: The Story of Lil Baby, he talks about how Young Thug, was also like a mentor to him. Thug kept Lil Baby out of the streets and in the studio, and encouraged him to start making music. Baby eventually released his first mixtape, Perfect Timing, in 2017 which features Young Thug and Lil Yachty.
Succeeding at getting the feel of making music, Baby released more projects afterwards; Harder Than Hard followed three months later, and 2 The Hard Way was released in October. It was a collaboration with his friend and fellow Atlanta rapper Marlo. His 2017 album Too Hard released in December. The hit single ‘Freestyle’ was certified gold in February 2020.
Baby has definitely had an amazing career. There is a sea of people who will argue with you that Lil Baby is the best rapper of this generation. His lyricism and fast paced rapping made him stand out to many other artists.  He makes music for almost every single mood, the beats in his song range from fast to slow paced. He went from never having rapped before, to be coming one of the best artists to come out of Atlanta. His album My Turn set a new Billboard record by spending a total of 106 weeks on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. He also uses his voice to fight for controversial topics, such as in his song ‘The Bigger Picture’, which focuses on the BLM movement and the travesties that the black community has went through.

‘Drip Too Hard’ was the lead single off of Lil Baby and Gunna’s album, Drip Harder. Since the release, the song currently has over 4 billion worldwide streams. Sadly, at the moment Wunna is in prison for allegedly being a part of the YSL gang (Young Slime Life). Gunna, along with Young Thug have been charged with violating Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. I’m sure he’s still celebrating where he is!

Lil Baby has been having an amazing week to add on to the diamond hit. According to Billboard, the rapper’s “Detox” single debuted at #25 on the latest Hot 100 rankings. As a result, Lil Baby tied Elvis Presley for 9th place on the list of most all-time entries on the Hot 100. Presley and Baby both have exactly 109 tracks that have made it onto the weekly tally.
