Underground rap lyricist Freddie Gibbs dropped a music video for his new song “Gang Signs” featuring ScHoolboy Q last week.
Cokane Rabbit–Freddie Gibbs’ online alias since being banned on Instagram–is the main subject. The Gangster Rabbit wakes up,grabs his gun, and rides through the city passing various animals on his way. ScHoolboy Q is seen as a turtle with a golden grill riding in his own whip.
The single comes after his collaboration with Hit-boy and Big Sean on “4 Thangs” last October. His 2020 collaborative studio project, Alfredo, was produced by The Alchemist and up for a Grammy nomination for Best Rap album.
The Indiana native has been in the game for a while, and seems to be getting the traction he deserves. The song talks about wanting to be “legit” and maybe getting some hardware later this month could prove it.
Freddie reminds us he’s been doing rap before it was luxurious and he had to sell dope to get by. It was do or die for Gibbs back then, and the video depicts those days in a brighter light.
A jazzy trumpet melody carries you into the dreamy world of Gibbs while he’s “Ridin’ in the Volvo with the dope shit”. While the Piano carries out a light background, Feddie Gibbs and ScHoolboy Q keep the flow front and center.
This is definitely a great start of 2021 for the Grammy-nominated rapper. Gang Signs” is also his second song and video since signing with Warner so we might just be seeing a rekindling of a new era for Gibbs.
