Inside “Euphoria” and the Season 3 Writers Strike Delay

The hit HBO show Euphoria’s third season was recently delayed because of the writers strike. The show’s third season was going to be released sooner, but HBO had to put it on hold until 2025. The creator, Sam Levinson, is also currently working on a new show, The Idol. As of now, it appears the new season cannot start shooting until everyone who’s a part of the show is back together. This is not the first time the season has faced delays, as the second season was also on hold amid the pandemic.

Considering the show became a big hit for HBO, it came about in somewhat of an unorganized way. HBO’s head of drama, Francesca Orsi, mentioned in Hollywood Life, “Euphoria is one of those that we had begun writing in tandem with post-production on Idol, but at this point, we don’t have countless scripts.” Others seem to be left in the dark with what will happen with the new season. According to Maude Apatow, she does not know a thing about what is happening with the new season. She only hopes that one will hear something in the near future.

As far as the season three cast goes, Zendaya will return as the main character, Rue. The actress recently signed a re-negotiation contract for $1 million per episode, as she was not entirely sure if she was going to return. HBO Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys commented on the matter, telling Hollywood Life, “It’s hard to imagine doing the show without her. She’s going to be in season 3.” The rest of the original cast will return as well except Barbie Ferreira. The actress did not state why she was leaving, only that it was a tearful goodbye. Javon Walton will also not return given his character Ashtray was killed off. That said, the actor hopes that the character could come back, as the plot line does not fully reveal his death.

As season two ended with a lot of action and drama playing out in eight episodes, season three will answer just as much in the same amount of time. Most of the plot is kept under wraps and only a continuation of character storylines is revealed. This includes Cassie and Nate’s relationship, the meltdown over Lexi’s play, and Fezco’s possibility of being in prison. There is also hope for more backstories, especially with Ali’s character.

With the show’s future at stake, hopefully the long hiatus can be enough to keep the show running.
