If you hadn’t heard Chappell Roan’s name before this week, that’s probably a cause for concern, but we all have things slip through the cracks every once and in a while. Right now, if you’re somehow unaware of “your favorite artists’ favorite artist,” we have some serious questions. Racking up endorsements from seemingly every major artist in the pop space and drawing reportedly the biggest crowd in Lollapalooza history, she is at a point of undeniability. And that goes for our Music Daily Trending Tracks Chart as well; here are three Chappell Roan tracks that rose on our rankings this week and why they’re racking up such huge numbers.
“Pink Pony Club”
Much the same as the rest of The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess, “Pink Pony Club” sees Chapelle Roan tangling with and embracing her queer identity, written after a night at a West Hollywood gay bar. See the lyrics for the complicated emotions that come with the journey: “Won’t make my mama proud, it’s gonna cause a scene / She sees her baby girl, I know she’s gonna scream.”
What makes the success of “Pink Pony Club” so intriguing is its release date. While included on 2023’s breakout The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, the song was actually first released in 2020, one of her final releases under Universal Records. Though it flows well on her debut LP, its current trending status speaks to how Chappell Roan has truly been bubbling under the surface the whole time; it’s more a case of the public catching on rather than a sudden jump in talent.
“Red Wine Supernova”
While “Good Luck, Babe” and its own virality can be attributed as the genesis of this Chappell Roan moment, “Red Wine Supernova” stamped it for good. Inescapable and endlessly revisitable, the track’s success coincided with her approaching “household name status,” Roan’s choice to perform on late night stages and as a climax of her live performances.
Built on twangy guitars and relaying a one-night love story, “Red Wine Supernova” feels plucked out of the pop-star playbook, but with the requisite charm that Chappell Roan continues to major in. It’s no shock that it bucked its own narrative and stayed far longer than just a few days, persisting on our charts more than sixteen months after its initial release.
“Casual”
Finally we have “Casual.” Particularly when contrasted to “Red Wine Supernova,” the final single from The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess leans much more operatic and classical, giving ground-level, lucid reflections on a fling that’s threatening to become something more.
For our money, this is a fitting end cap on a dominant three song set in our charting; while the feel good energy of the previous two makes it easy to digest some level of success, this showcases why she’s the whole package. From standout vocal runs to gorgeous instrumentation, “Casual” is a strong argument why Chappell Roan isn’t just a name you can’t get away from now, she’s poised to become a truly era-defining act.
