Kendrick Lamar’s latest album, GNX, spotlights a new wave of talent, including two rising Latin artists making waves in hip-hop. The collaboration underscores Lamar’s appreciation for diverse voices and his recognition of their growing influence in the music industry.
Mexican Rapper Peysoh Collab
The eleventh track, “gnx,” opens with Mexican rapper Peysoh delivering a raw and authentic verse. Hailing from Maywood, California, the 20-year-old artist brings his experiences to the forefront. From losing his father at a young age to navigating life post-incarceration, Peysoh’s lyrics are shaped by his journey. Inspired by his late friend and fellow rapper MoneySign Suede, Peysoh began writing music at 13 and has since released notable projects like Ghetto Journal (2022) and Get Rich or Life Sliding (2023). Reflecting on the collaboration, Peysoh shared his pride on Instagram, writing, “This one’s for the west🇲🇽🥂.”
Another standout moment comes on “tv off,” a DJ Mustard-produced track featuring Guatemalan-Mexican-American rapper Lefty Gunplay in the outro. A Baldwin Park native, Lefty is no stranger to the Los Angeles rap scene. His music captures the struggles of growing up in the San Gabriel Valley and the challenges he’s faced, including incarceration. Known for his vulnerability, Lefty’s dedication to representing his culture resonates with fans. “It’s a lot of pressure, but I’m not going to disappoint,” he said in an interview. “If I could do it, they could do it too.”
Wanted In The Studio…
Lefty’s collaboration with Lamar came as a surprise. In an interview with Power106, he admitted he initially didn’t believe it when told, “Kendrick wants you in the studio.” Once they connected, the session was described as relaxed and inspiring, with Lamar expressing admiration for Lefty’s work and hinting at future projects together. “I’m blessed and humbled to represent us,” Lefty shared, emphasizing the significance of this opportunity.
The Significance of Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show
For Lamar, who’s set to headline the 2025 Super Bowl, featuring Latin artists on GNX is a testament to the growing global impact of música mexicana and the integral role Latin creatives play in Los Angeles culture and the hip-hop scene.
