Caroline Polachek debuts her “catchiest song yet,” titled “Dang,” live on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert in a Ted Talk-styled performance. This is her first release since her highly acclaimed February LP, Desire, I Want To Turn Into You, which capped as Pitchfork’s Best New Music with a score of 8.7.
To celebrate the long-awaited release, floating about on the internet for some time, Polachek debuted the track with a special performance on Colbert. However, the host was not present as he has COVID. While the professor-fied 38-year-old clicks through a self-deprecating and demur reality check, the eclectic instruments feel like the same SOPHIE starter pack to build her 2021 single, “Bunny Is A Rider.” Besides the obviously friendly homage, “Dang” was produced by Polachek and Cecile Believe, with additional production by Danny L Harle.
From the meme-worthy slides, experimental wailing and movements, and awkward close-up, delightfully weird doesn’t seem to summarize the almost three-minute performance. Watch it below!
In other news, Polachek performed Desire hits “Pretty In Possible,” “Blood And Butter,” “Sunset” and more for NPR’s Tiny Desk. Getting to the closing track, “I Believe” is even more unbelievably beautiful thanks to the song’s remembrance, which Polachek shared to Instagram. “[…] The heart of this song is a dedication to SOPHIE,” she says, “and her embodiment of contradictions which still shines a bright light and casts a long shadow.”
