July 24: Taylor Swift’s songwriting masterpiece: Folklore
On this day three years ago, Taylor Swift released her eighth album, Folklore. The album arrived very unexpectedly, since the singer decided to avoid any sort of publicity campaign and opted for a more straight forward solution: announcing the release only one day earlier. The album however immediately went straight to the top of the charts, just like her previous six albums.
Folklore includes fans’ favourites as “cardigan,” “august,” “invisible string” and “the 1.” It was soon after followed by the album’s sister, Evermore.
July 25: 13-Year-Old Dolly Parton debuts
Two years after recording her first hit “Puppy Love” (released in 1959) on Goldband Records, on July 25th, 1959 Dolly Parton made her first appearance singing George Jones’ “You Gotta Be My Baby.” The singer performed at the Grand Ole Opry after being introduced by Johnny Cash. Back then she was only 13 years old, but still received three encores.
July 26: The Passing of Whitney Houston’s Daughter Bobbi Kristina: We’ve Seen It All Before
In 2015, Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown‘s daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown passed away at the young age of 22. The woman was found unconscious in her bathtub in her home on January 31 of the same year, sadly just like her mom few years before. She passed away from lobar pneumonia nearly six months after being in coma. The cause of death was later revealed to be “immersion associated with drug intoxication.”
July 27: “You’re So Vain”But Make It Swift
In 2013 at Gillette Stadium in Boston during one of her concerts Taylor Swift brought out nothing less than one of her – and our – idols, Carly Simon. The artists performed together Simon’s hit “You’re So Vain.” The song also includes one of Swift’s favorite lines, “I had some dreams they were clouds in my coffee.”
The song famously discusses the failed relationship between Simon and one of her famous ex – just like many of Swift’s songs, creating a connection between the two in their performance.
July 28: What’s The 411?
On July 28th, 1992, Mary J. Blige released her debut album, What’s The 411? Ranging from R&B to soul, and from hip-hop to rap, the album reached the top of Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart, and also the sixth position on the Billboard 200. With her unique flow and very particular fusion of genres, Mary J. Blige got herself the nickname “Queen of Hip Hop Soul.”
July 29: RENAISSANCE
On this day last year Beyoncé dropped her seventh solo album, REINASSANCE. The album included hits that immediately went viral, also trending on TikTok. This includes “BREAK MY SOUL,” “CUFF IT” and “ALIEN SUPERSTAR.” Like her previous six albums, it fast went to #1 in America.
July 30: Enter Sandman anticipates the Black Album
On this day in 1991, Metallica’s biggest hit “Enter Sandman” saw the light and is released as a single. The song built the anticipation of the the band’s great Black Album. The album reached #16 on the Hot 100, the group’s biggest hit. Later on, it would become Metallica’s most famous album and also fundamental for the development of the genre.
