Wallows Covers “505 and “Sofia” and It’s An Alt. Dream Come True
Wallows’ Clairo and Arctic Monkeys mashup is the line where alternative icons collide. The band’s medley of “505” / “Sofia” in a new cover has fans of all three bands swooning. Each of these artists have a large following, so this collaboration is one for the history books.
Wallows are a Los Angeles-based alternative rock group fronted by Thirteen Reasons Why’s Dylan Minnette. Clairo is a Georgia-born, Massachusetts-raised alternative pop artist whose career started with a viral YouTube video. Arctic Monkeys are a genre-defining alt. rock group from London.
While each group has their own hits, strengths, and fans, there is a lot of crossover influence and style wise. Many believe that this is why Wallows mashing up Clairo and Arctic Monkeys and covering the medley is so effortless. Their sounds coincide sonically and artistically, with warm-toned guitar riffs and strong melodies.
Wallows’ “505” and “Sofia” takes Arctic Monkeys’ and Clairo’s hits and turns it into one of it’s own. The LA band took gritty indie rock and floaty bedroom pop and turned it into a stellar alternative experience. Minnette and drummer Cole Preston stun on distorted vocals – something Preston does rarely, making this a treat.
Wallows’ Clairo and Arctic Monkeys Mashup Is For A Cause
The cover was virtual for The Ally Coalition’s 7th Annual Talent Show on December 21. The livestream event was hosted by Bleachers’ Jack Antonoff. It had guest speakers and also raised $350,000 for homeless LGBTQ+ homeless shelters. In addition, the Ally Coalition, started by Antonoff, advocates for LGBTQ+ youth and takes action for equality.
After the performance, Wallows took to Twitter to thank fans and give them another way to support the cause. “thank you all for tuning in to the @allycoalition talent show last night. very happy to see you enjoyed the cover. if you want to keep donating to their cause to support homeless LGBTQ youth, you can do so here…” They followed up with a direct link to donate to The Ally Coalition’s PayPal account.
Arctic Monkeys’ “505” may have been released in 2012 and Clairo’s “Sofia” may have been a hit in 2019. Thanks to Wallows, though, the two tracks are helping make a difference at the tail end of 2020. (And they sound great together, too!)
