Exceeding yet another impressive benchmark, diamond-selling Toronto artist The Weeknd’s smash single “Blinding Lights” has broken chart records spending 52nd weeks in the top 10 of Billboard Hot 100. It’s the first song in the history of the chart (which began Aug. 4, 1958) to spend a full year in the top 10.
Additionally, The Weeknd has received the 2020 Global Digital Single Award for the septuple-platinum hit “Blinding Lights”. The award recognizes the best-selling single of the year worldwide. This looks across individual track downloads as well as paid and ad-supported streams.
The Weeknd’s most recent project, After Hours, released in March of 2020, also garnered multiple certifications from the RIAA. The double-platinum album featured the tracks “Save Your Tears,” “After Hours,” and “In Your Eyes” which all progressed to platinum. Additionally, “Blinding Lights” has officially been minted seven-times platinum.
This news comes after The Weeknd’s historical Superbowl performance back in February, which left many speechless. Ironically, even with this year proving to be his most successful, we still can’t get over that the Grammys snubbed him of all nominations this year.
The award show is set to broadcast on Sunday, March 14 at 8 PM EST/ 5 PM PST on CBS. The Grammys considered The Weeknd as one of the main performers for this year’s show before shockingly leaving the mega-star out of the Grammy conversation.
Despite not getting recognition from the Academy, it is clear that the world was in love with him and his Blinding Lights.
