The recording-breaking artist and recent Grammy snub, The Weeknd released a compelling music video on Tuesday for his song “Save Your Tears”.
The abstract music video featured an intensely modified Weeknd performing on stage in front of an audience in masks. Seen with lip fillers, cheek implants, and a nose job, The Weekend goes around the room carelessly messing with the stale crowd.
There is much speculation on weather the botched cosmetic surgery is real or not. The Weekend also showed up to the VMA’s and AMA’s with bandages and and a bloody face, very similar to what we have seen in his previous music videos. This all may be to just mess with the media and promote the theme of After Hours.
The events of the past months give so much meaning to the song as well as the visual. In November, The Academy didn’t put up any nominations for the artist after arguably his best year. The Weeknd took to social media to call out The Academy and their “corruption”. The controversial decision led many fans and music lovers to take the award show off its pedestal.
The video was conveniently released after the Grammy’s announced that the show is postponed due to safety concerns with Covid-19. Nevertheless, The Weeknd is still scheduled to perform at this year’s Superbowl LV half-time show on February 7.
The video and song showed that the R&B heavyweight is not worried about what The Academy thinks. He wants everyone to save their tears because he has plenty already going for him. The only way he sees himself fitting into their picture is if he changes himself as he does in the video. But that is not The Weeknd we all know and love.
