Rebecca Black Celebrates ‘Friday’ 10-Year Anniversary in New Remix

Exactly ten years ago, Rebecca Black released the single that would become viral and give her fame, ‘Friday’. Now that she’s not a thirteen-year-old anymore, she decided to give the track a more modern vibe. She collaborated with 3OH!3, Big Freddia & Dorian Electra to create a remix of the song, which indeed sounds very different from the original.

The ‘Friday’ Remix Was Years in the Works

The shocking remix comes just on the heels of yet another milestone for the viral single. On Monday, ‘Friday’ was officially certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), meaning the single has moved more than 500,000 units.

“I’d had the idea to do this remix of Friday for years leading up to now, but honestly it was also mildly insane for me to think anyone else would want to be a part of it,” Rebecca said of the new remix in a statement. “As I started talking about it with other artists and producers, I couldn’t believe how stoked people were about it. I am thrilled to have some of my favorite artists (and people) as a part of this moment.”

Rebecca’s Message to her Old Selves

Last year, on ‘Friday’ 9-year-anniversary, Rebecca shared her feelings about the song that changed her life. “Above all things, I just wish I could go back and talk to my 13-year-old self who was terribly ashamed of herself and afraid of the world.” She penned in a Notes app screenshot that she posted on Twitter.

She shared to Billboard, “To my 15-year-old self who felt like she had nobody to talk to about the depression she faced. To my 17-year-old self who would get to school only to get food thrown at her and her friends. To my 19-year-old self who had almost every producer/songwriter tell me they’d never work with me. Hell, to myself a few days ago who felt disgusting when she looked in the mirror! I’m trying to remind myself more and more that every day is a new opportunity to shift your reality and lift your spirit. You are not defined by anyone’s choice or thing. Time heals and nothing is finite. It’s a process that’s never too late to begin. and so, here we go!”

The new remix of ‘Friday’ definitely gives closure to an epic era. Most of us who heard the original song for the first time were really young when it came out. Now, we’ve grown just like Rebecca and get to witness this memorable moment.
