Perfume Genius Will Make You Fall in Love Immediately

Perfume Genius, the genre-spanning singer-songwriter, has released a remix album of his 2020 release, Set My Heart on Fire Immediately. It is titled Immediately Remixes.

The new compilation is an entire rework of his previous album’s tracklist. It features the remixing work of many talented artists, including A.G. Cook, the underground electronic composer of PC Music fame.

How Well Do You Know Perfume Genius?

Perfume Genius, real name Michael Hadreas, was born in Des Moines, Iowa in 1981. He took piano lessons as a child, but he wouldn’t pursue music until adulthood. Being openly gay from a young age, his childhood was turbulent and overwhelmed him too much to be a good music student- or to be a student at all.

After dropping out of his Seattle high school in his senior year, he relocated to New York City. During this time, he worked odd jobs, made paintings, and dated men without consequence. However, he developed a drug addiction. Then in 2005, he returned to Seattle and underwent rehab. After getting out and moving in with his parents, he began recording music. Harking back to the music lessons of his childhood, his early lyrics were often set against a backdrop of an isolated, melancholic piano.

Three years later, he created a MySpace page under the username Perfume Genius, beginning his music career. Tom Tykwer’s 2006 film Perfume: The Story of a Murderer is the source of his stage name.

Perfume Genius released his debut album, Learning, during Pride Month in 2010. It was an instant critical success, earning rave scores from Pitchfork, NME, and Metacritic. All his following albums earned similar praise, and each one continues to build his devoted fanbase.

His music is informed by the struggles he’s experienced throughout his life (homophobic bullying, death threats, and being the subject of a hate crime); and thus resonate strongly with the LGBT community. Similarly, his music also covers his personal history with Crohn’s disease, as well as domestic abuse.
