GRAMMY-Award winner and ‘sad girl’ priestess Olivia Rodrigo leaves a bitter mark with “Vampire.” The emotionally raw yet extravagantly-composed track marks the lead single from the 20-year-old artist’s massively anticipated sophomore album GUTS, out September 8th. Rodrigo’s highly-anticipated album is available for pre-save and for pre-order on CD, cassette, or vinyl here.
Produced by and co-written with Daniel Nigro, “Vampire” departs from the dreamy minimalism of past hits like the breakthrough single “drivers license.” Actually, “Vampire” begins with a hushed intensity before bursting pulse-pounding drumbeats and frantic piano work.
“It’s a song about feeling confused and hurt, and at first I thought it was meant to be a piano ballad,” Rodrigo said. “But when Dan and I started working on it, we juxtaposed the lyrics with these big drums and crazy tempo changes So now it’s like a heartbreak song you can dance to.”
“I was upset about a certain situation and went to the studio alone and sat down at the grand piano, and the chords and melody and lyrics just poured out of me — almost like an out-of-body experience.”

The Petra Collins-directed music video flawlessly embodies the disenchantment of a pop star’s life. What starts as a flawless performance unravels into set malfunctions, stage fires, and being hustled by paparazzi on the street. Collins has been a staple in Rodrigo’s videography since her multi-platinum debut album, SOUR. However, Collins got her big break came from Selena Gomez’s 2017 hit “Fetish” featuring Gucci Mane.
From her site, Collins’ edgy, whimsical aesthetics graced the covers of Interview Magazine, TIME, Vogue and ELLE. In addition, Rodrigo tops her A-list clientele, which includes BLACKPINK, Lil Nas X, Pamela Anderson, and Megan Fox.
