Mitski’s New Album
Mitski is dropping an exclusive new album in support of a graphic novel release. This is the indie-rock singer-songwriter’s first album release since 2018’s Be the Cowboy, the album responsible for her biggest radio-friendly hit, “Nobody”.
The graphic novel, and Mitski’s accompanying score, is titled, This Is Where We Fall. It is the first release in a new science-fiction series. Mitski spoke of her involvement in a press release.
“It was exciting to make a soundtrack for a comic book. It allowed me to work outside of my usual songwriting form and try to approach it like a score… without any of the cues that come with working alongside a moving image, which ended up being both freeing and challenging. I hope the end result helps to immerse you in the story!”
Josh Frankel of the publisher Z2 also spoke in the press release.
“A project and partnership like this is the perfect marriage of a visual art form like comics, and music. Fans of Mitski’s music will not only get something new from one of their favorite artists, but a companion piece that completes the experience. Comics readers will find an original work of science fiction from top creators that is enhanced by the music that accompanies it.”
Mitski is Out of This World
Until this new album comes out, Mitski’s only releases since 2018 are two singles. First, “Cop Car”, from 2020’s The Turning’s soundtrack. Second, a feature on Allie X’s song “Susie Save Your Love” off of the 2020 album Cape God. These were rare sights of the elusive Mitski, who took a break from music and public appearances after her last tour in 2019. She also deactivated her popular social media accounts. The indie-rocker’s fans hope This Is Where We Fall is her first step back into public view.
Mitski’s original score will be available on vinyl and cassette on March 9th. You can preorder the album on the Z2 website here.
