Marshmello Drops Unexpected Debut Album “Sugar Papi”

This year, Marshmello earned a Latin Grammy for Best Tropical Song for “El Merengue” with Manuel Turizo.

Marshmello, who notably earned a Latin Grammy nomination earlier this year, decided to go full-force and release his 11-track Latin (and debut) album, Sugar Papi. The masked electronic hitmaker announced his spontaneous Latin foray in October, with features from Tiago PZK (“Como Yo :(“), Young Miko (“Tempo”), Farruko (“Esta Vida”), and more.

“I’ve had the pleasure of being able to perform all across the world and it’s hard to match the love and energy I’ve felt from the Latin community,” Marshmello wrote on Instagram. “Because of that I knew it was important for me to find a way to bring my audience into this world as much as I could.”

Marshmello revealed to Billboard his eagerness to create a full body of work, and how Sony Latin reached out at the right time. “I’d always wanted to tap into Latin music and it just seemed like a perfect time to first knock out the album that I’ve always wanted to do and Latin and everybody was so cool and so nice. It was a no-brainer.” Although Billboard didn’t grasp the future of his work, we can expect Latin to be a vital asset in his production to come.

Marshmello’s Sugar Papi solidified his cross-genre appeal, topping the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, Hot Rock & Alternative Songs, Pop Airplay charts, and now securing a No. 1 single on the Latin Airplay chart for his unexpected and Latin Grammy-nominated hit with Manuel Turizo, “El Merengue.”
